GTE for Student visa changes

The Department of Home Affairs has recently announced upcoming changes for student visa applications SC 500, whereby the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) requirement will be replaced by GS - Genuine Student requirement.

GS Requirement will aim to identify students with genuine intention to obtain a quality education in Australia. Instead of requesting a GTE statement, the application form will be ask students targeted questions about:

  • details of their current circumstances, including ties to family, employment and economic situation

  • explanation for choosing Australia as a study destination

  • benefits of a course to the applicant

  • details of any study history in Australia

  • reasons for applying for a student visa if holding a different visa

These changes are expected to take place on 23 March 2024 and student visa applications lodged on or after this date will be assessed according to new GS requirements and new Ministerial Direction.
