Review of the Australian migration system

Last week, the Minister for Home Affairs Clare O'Neil released the review of the Australian migration system with several proposals designed to fix it.


Amongst the key announcements are the following:

- increase of TSMIT (the minimum salary for sponsorship visas) to $70,000 from current $53,900 from 01 July

- permanent residence pathways for workers sponsored under the short-term stream by the end of 2023

- changes to student visa program aiming to strengthen its integrity

- three new pathways for skilled migrants - one for specialised, highly- skilled workers; the second one for mainstream, core skills and the third for essential industries

- reforms in the points test and skilled occupation lists

- simplifying the visa system and reducing number of visa categories.
